Music and literature both have great appeal to Ty’Kia Harris, a sixth-grader at Arctic Light Elementary.

 Arctic Light Elementary held a school-wide spelling bee 29 January. Darryn Spring (first place), Riley Gautier (second place), and Roy Anthony Gutierrez (third place) earned the chance to represent our school at the district level!

Former Arctic Light Elementary student Valerie Martucci is the recipient of a Carson Scholarship. The Carson Scholarship is named after Dr. Ben Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon who founded the Carson Scholars Fund to recognize students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarian qualities.

Martucci is now a student at Tanana Middle School though she earned the $1,000 college scholarship while her father was deployed in Iraq and she was a student at Arctic Light Elementary School.

Since its inception in 1996, the Carson Scholars Fund has awarded nearly $2 million in scholarship funds.

Mary is the new principal at Arctic Light in this upcoming school year. At Arctic Light, Carlson will replace Mary Cofer, who retired this year. Carlson is already quite familiar with Fort Wainwright. Prior to her career with the district, she served in the U.S. Army for over four years and was stationed at Fort Wainwright during her service.
